What Your Policies Tell People About You?

If a new employee read your policies before meeting anyone at the organization, what would they learn about how people are treated here?

They would learn more than you might expect. Policies tell people what behaviour is expected, what decisions managers can make, where flexibility is allowed, what needs approval, what gets questioned, and what the organization is prepared to trust.

That is why policies should be reviewed against the employee experience the organization is trying to create. Compliance matters, of course. But a policy can be legally sound and still send the wrong message about how people are trusted, supported, managed, or expected to work.

This matters especially when an organization is trying to attract and retain people. If the employee experience is meant to emphasize flexibility, trust, balance, development, or stability, those choices should show up in the policies employees actually use. Otherwise, the organization may say one thing in recruitment and communicate something different in day-to-day rules.

For example, an employer may offer higher-than-market salaries and generous vacation because it wants to be seen as a place that values balance and retention. But if its leave policy stops vacation from accruing while someone is away, the policy may send a different message. That approach may be legally compliant, and it may make sense in some organizations. The point is to ask whether it matches the employee experience the organization says it wants to create.

Leave policies are a good example. A policy can make it clear what support is available, who decides, and how exceptions will be handled. Or it can leave every request feeling like a strict policy decided and not a human. Employees notice that difference when they are dealing with illness, family responsibilities, grief, or other difficult circumstances. Managers notice it too, because unclear wording forces them to make judgment calls without enough guidance.

Many organizations have written policies that define family narrowly. That may be administratively simple, but it can miss the relationships that matter most in someone’s life. Boreala has developed bereavement policies that provide greater flexibility based on the importance of the relationship, rather than relying only on the letter of the law. These policies still set limits, but they help managers apply those limits fairly instead of reducing each situation to a cold analysis of the government’s definition of family or relationship. That kind of policy helps an organization be seen as flexible, respectful, and responsive to real circumstances.

Policy language also affects the employee experience. If a policy is written in plain English, people are more likely to understand it, use it, and apply it consistently. If it is written mainly for legal or technical completeness, the message can get lost. Employees should not need to interpret dense language to understand what is expected of them or what support is available.

So, Ask Yourself Again

If a new employee read your policies today, what would they learn?

Would they find a workplace where expectations are clear?

Where flexibility is real, not arbitrary?

Where managers have enough guidance to make fair, consistent decisions?

Where people know exactly what support is available and what happens next?

And where the policies actually reflect what the organization claims matters most when it comes to attracting and keeping good people?
